Project Management 3 Principles
- The “What”: What are you trying to accomplish?
- Your “Whys”: Why are you doing this project?
- The “How”: How are you going to do it?
Let us consider them one by one.
The “What”: What are you trying to accomplish?
Project management is all about accomplishing a task.
So you should be clear about what you want to achieve and how it will benefit the company. It is also known as the goal or objective of the project.
For example, if you want to improve customer service, then the goal can be to reduce the average call time from 10 minutes to 5 minutes.
This objective has to be SMART i.e. specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound.
The “Whys”: Why are you doing this project?
After deciding on the “what” (what you want to do), comes the “whys” (why are you doing it).
You need to clearly define them. So, make sure you have the most important reasons in front of you when things get tough later on. These reasons are also called business drivers or project objectives.
The business drivers will help you decide whether your project should continue or not. If your project does not meet these objectives or is not contributing towards them, then it will eventually fail for sure.
They could vary from one project to another depending on their nature and purpose but there are some general drivers that apply universally.
The “How”: How are you going to do it?
Once you know the “what” and “whys” of your project, you need to decide your approach or methodology.
There are various project management methodologies you can use when you are creating a project plan.
You will have the product backlog, sprint backlog, and sprint review meeting. You will also have to burn down charts and sprint burndown charts. In the same way, there are techniques like Agile, waterfall, and FDD that you can use.
Why Some Project Management Fail
Unfortunately, a lot of project management fails because of the way it is implemented.
When you start implementing project management, you need to make sure that everyone is on the same page.
If you are not able to do that, then there is a big chance that you will lose sight of your goal and objectives. This will happen because people may have different ideas about what they want to achieve.
When this happens, people will try to change your goal or objective and they might even try to derail your project altogether.
You may also end up failing because of unclear objectives and goals. So, you need to make sure that the goals and objectives are clear from the very beginning.
Conclusion
So, these are the 3 universal principles for project management. These are very important for any type of project whether it is large or small.
If you want to succeed in your projects, then make sure that you follow these principles.
