Let us now consider the 5 Rs of product design. What are they and what is their value? Scroll down to learn more about the topic.
What Are the 5 Rs of Product Design?
The 5 R’s of product design are five sequential steps in the design process when designing a new product.
1) Research
This is the very first step in the process of developing a new product. It involves studying the market, talking to customers, performing an analysis of competitors’ products, and so on.
Related to the 5 R’s of product design, market research is an important research activity that helps you gain insights about a particular product (or service) or some aspects of your target market.
2) Requirements
The second step in the process is defining requirements for your product. What features do you want it to have? What functions does it have to perform? How should it be designed? What materials should it be made from? And so on.
3) Review
After defining the requirements for your product, you need to evaluate these requirements to make sure that they are feasible and acceptable from a business perspective. This is where the review of requirements comes into play.
4) Prototype
What if at this stage you realize that some of your requirements are not feasible or acceptable? Or maybe you realize that some additional requirements should be added to improve your product? This is where prototyping comes into play. Prototyping is necessary to make sure that your end product will meet all your expectations and will satisfy the needs of your customers.
5) Release
This is the last step in the design process, which involves introducing your new product into the market (or service). You can also call this step commercialization or launch. For example, after completing all prototyping activities, you may introduce a new version of your website into the beta-testing mode or publish a book using print-on-demand technology. In other words, as soon as you have completed all the required steps for developing a new product (or service), you are ready to release it into the market. This means that you are ready to start selling it (providing it as a service). In doing so, you can conduct marketing activities such as advertising campaigns, promotional events (e.g., exhibitions or contests), etc., to increase awareness of your product and increase its sales/revenue potential.
Why Is It Important to Know?
Product design can be a complicated activity. The 5 R’s of product design are based on the assumption that product design should be done in a systematic, structured, and logical way.
Many companies have used the 5 R’s of product design as a guideline when developing new products. This is not because they are legally required to do so. It is simply because this approach allows them to organize their actions more efficiently and effectively.
In addition, the 5 R’s of product design provide a clear and comprehensive overview of all activities that have to be performed when developing a new product (or service). Therefore, business leaders can use this approach to show their employees that there is a logical sequence of steps in the process of product design.
It is also important to remember that, even though this approach has been developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), it should not be considered as the only way of designing a new product. It is just one of the many possible approaches.
