What Really Is Product Management Leadership?
Let’s be honest here. There’s a lot to know about product management. So much so that it is difficult to find a single definition of the term.
Some people will tell you that it’s the job of a product manager to ensure that the product is delivered on time and within budget.
Others will say it’s about setting the strategy for the product and then getting the team to deliver on that strategy.
Do you agree with these definitions? Not really. And neither do most experienced product managers.
So what does it mean?
We view product management leadership as being able to bring together the right people. And then lead them in a manner that will achieve business objectives. It’s also about achieving great products.
Before we go into more detail, let us take a step back and ask what we are trying to achieve with our products?
That’s right – we need to sell more stuff!
So in order to do this, we need to make sure that we are building products that people want. And making sure that they buy them. In order for people to buy them, they need to be good products!
So far so good – but now we have another problem!
How do we get all of these different types of people working together towards achieving all of these business goals? That’s where leadership comes in!
Choosing the Right Product Management Leadership Styles
It’s up to you as the leader (the Product Manager) to lead these people in such a way that they will deliver on time and within budget while still producing great products.
So how can you choose the right style of leadership for your needs?
The first thing to consider is the level of control and the level of openness that you have with your team.
Do you need to be hands-on? Do you need to have control over everything? Is it important that you are kept up-to-date with progress on a regular basis? If so, then a hands-on, directive leadership style will suit your needs.
On the other hand, if you want to provide a framework for your team and then let them get on with their work, then an open style will work better for you.
The style of leadership that you choose will also depend on how much time and effort you want to invest in leading your team.
