What Is the Role of a Product Design Engineer?

Your key areas of responsibility as a product design engineer will include:
- Research & analyze market requirements and consumer trends
- Develop new concepts and design products
- Work with other team members to modify existing products or create new ones
- Specify materials and components for manufacture
- Conduct stress tests on prototypes
- Produce technical drawings and reports for manufacture
- Oversee the production process from initial stages to final assembly in factories overseas
In addition, there is plenty of scope for career progression within this area. With experience, you might move into specialist or managerial roles such as R&D design engineer, research & development chief engineer, or quality assurance manager. Or you could move into sales or technical marketing as a sales engineer or technical sales engineer. You could also progress into management as a manufacturing director or engineering director.

You will need good time management skills so that you can meet deadlines while maintaining high-quality standards. Excellent Communication and Presentation Skills
As a product design engineer, you will need to be both an excellent communicator and presenter. You must be able to explain technical concepts clearly, both in writing and verbally, so that they can be understood by those outside your field of expertise. This means that you must have excellent listening skills, so that you can understand the needs of all stakeholders within the business, from customers to other team members.
A Logical Mind
Product design engineers are often required to work under pressure, as deadlines are often very tight. To work effectively in this environment you will need a logical mind, which means that you are comfortable working with complex data and information, making reasoned decisions based on this data. This skill is particularly important when working with limited resources in an attempt to produce an acceptable result within the time constraints of the project.
